Three days is the correct first-trip length, and here's the shape: Day 1 — palaces, Bukchon and the Myeongdong market. Day 2 — market food by day, Hongdae by night. Day 3 — the DMZ in the morning, the Han River in the evening. Budget about $260 (~₩360,000) per person including the DMZ tour, a food tour and a river cruise, excluding your hotel. One thing cannot wait: the DMZ runs on a passport manifest, so book it at least 3 days before you fly. Everything else is walk-up.
Palaces, hanok lanes, Myeongdong
Gyeongbokgung Palace
Line 3, Gyeongbokgung Station, Exit 5. Entry ₩3,000; give it two full hours and be at Gwanghwamun Gate for the 10:00 guard ceremony — 20 minutes, free, worth planning around. Closed Tuesdays — if that's today, flip Day 1 with Day 2. Our full read: is Gyeongbokgung worth it? Bukchon Hanok Village
Walk 15 minutes east from the palace, or Line 3 one stop to Anguk, Exit 2. Head for Bukchon-ro 11-gil, the lane with the tower-over-rooftops shot. It's free, it's residential — stay quiet — and an hour is plenty. Details: Bukchon verdict.
Lunch and shopping in Insadong
Ten minutes downhill from Anguk Exit 6. Kalguksu or bibimbap in a side alley runs ₩10,000–12,000; the main-street restaurants with picture menus charge half again as much for worse. Insadong is also the sane souvenir stop — buy the tea and the stationery now, not at the airport.
Namsan cable car + N Seoul Tower
Anguk to Chungmuro on Line 3 (two stops), transfer to Line 4 for one stop to Myeongdong Station, Exit 3, then a 10-minute uphill walk to the cable car (₩15,000 round trip). The free terraces at the top handle sunset fine — read this before spending ₩21,000 on the observatory.
Myeongdong street-food dinner
Walk down into the market — 150+ carts from 17:00. ₩15,000–20,000 grazes you across egg bread, tteokbokki, hotteok and one showpiece lobster tail. Sleep near here if you took our base advice; day one ends with a five-minute walk home.
Eat Seoul, end in Hongdae
Gwangjang Market
Line 4 from Myeongdong three stops to Dongdaemun, transfer to Line 1 for one stop to Jongno 5-ga, Exit 8 — the market entrance is right there. Go hungry: bindaetteok mung-bean pancakes (₩5,000), mayak gimbap (₩3,000), yukhoe if you're brave. This is the market our market ranking puts first for a reason. Be done by 11:30, before the tour groups land.
Walk it off along Cheonggyecheon
The sunken stream runs a block south of the market, straight through downtown — flat, below street level, and the best digestive walk in the city. Follow it 30–40 minutes west toward City Hall, surface for coffee anywhere, no agenda. You're saving your legs for tonight.
Hongdae, daylight version
Line 2 from City Hall, six stops to Hongik University Station, Exit 9. Daytime Hongdae is vintage shops, records and street fashion spilling toward Yeonnam-dong — a different neighborhood from the one that shows up after dark. Coffee, browsing, and watch the buskers set up on the main drag.
Evening food tour
Tonight is the one meal you shouldn't self-cater. A guided evening food tour (~$85) gets you into the stalls and back-alley spots you'd never order at alone, with someone to explain what you're eating — the best single food spend of the trip for first-timers. Hongdae after dark
Busking peaks 21:00–23:00 near Exit 9; the bar alleys run until 05:00 if you let them. Noraebang — karaoke rooms, about ₩20,000/hour split between you — is the mandatory cultural experience. The border, then the river
DMZ tour pickup
Early alarm, worth it. Buses collect from Myeongdong or City Hall around 07:30 — bring your physical passport or you stay on the curb. The ~$50 3rd Tunnel + Suspension Bridge combo is the route we recommend in the full DMZ verdict: Imjingak, the infiltration tunnel, Dora Observatory looking into North Korea, back by mid-afternoon. This is the booking that had to happen 3+ days ago — the manifest goes to the military in advance.
Decompress: shower, coffee, nothing
You're back in central Seoul between 15:00 and 16:00 with bus legs. Go back to the hotel, shower, and resist the urge to cram in a museum. The evening is good; let it come to you.
Yeouido Hangang Park
Line 4 from Myeongdong two stops to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, transfer to Line 5 direct to Yeouinaru Station, Exit 3 — it opens onto the river park (about 30 minutes; a taxi is ₩12,000 and no faster at rush hour). Buy fried chicken and beer from the convenience stores in the park: chimaek on the grass while the bridges light up is the correct final evening in Seoul.
Han River evening cruise
The cruise dock is a 10-minute walk along the park from Yeouinaru Exit 3. Around $20 buys you 40–70 minutes on the water with the skyline doing its thing — timed right, you catch the Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain show (April–October, usually 20:00 and 20:30 runs). Book the sunset or night slot, not daytime.
Last lap
Back to base on Line 5 then Line 4, about 30 minutes. If you fly out tomorrow: Myeongdong to Incheon is one stop to Seoul Station plus the AREX — 75–90 minutes door to door, all on the T-money card you bought on day one. Details, as ever, on the planning page.
What three days cost
Tours and tickets: DMZ ~$50, evening food tour ~$85, river cruise ~$20, optional palace guide ~$40, palace entry plus cable car ~₩18,000. Food outside the tour: roughly ₩25,000/day doing markets and casual restaurants. Transport: a T-money card (₩2,500) plus about ₩15,000 in fares covers all three days. Total lands around $260 (~₩360,000) per person excluding your hotel — and $125 of that evaporates if you drop the food tour and palace guide, the two genuinely optional lines.
The one scheduling rule: the DMZ is the fixed point. It's closed Mondays, it needs 3+ days of lead time, and Tuesday closes Gyeongbokgung. Land those two constraints first and the rest of the itinerary shuffles freely.

Can I swap the days around?
Days 1 and 2 swap freely. Day 3 mostly can't move: DMZ tours need booking 3+ days ahead because your passport goes on a military manifest, the DMZ is closed Mondays, and Gyeongbokgung is closed Tuesdays. Fix your DMZ date first, then arrange the other two days around it.
Is 3 days enough for Seoul?
It's the honest minimum — you get the palace, the markets, Hongdae and the DMZ without sprinting. Five days adds a proper day trip east (see our ranking) and a slower food day. If you only have one day, use the 1-day triage instead.
Do I need a T-money card?
Yes — buy one at any CU or GS25 in the airport for ₩2,500 and load ₩20,000. Every subway ride on this itinerary (fares from ₩1,500) taps through it, and it works in taxis and convenience stores. Setup details on the planning page.
What about Gangnam and COEX?
Deliberately cut. Gangnam is a fine half-day — COEX, Bongeunsa, the library atrium — but on a 3-day first trip it loses to everything above. It's the first thing to add if you find a day four.
Where should I stay for this itinerary?
Myeongdong, and it's not close: Day 1 ends there, the Day 3 tour bus leaves from there, and the airport train is one stop away. Hongdae works if nightlife outranks convenience for you — the trade-offs are on our versus page and the full area rundown at where to stay.
